Nichiren Calming the Stormy Sea by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861)

Nichiren on his way to exile in Sado island along with his disciples on the stormy sea of western Japan off the coast of Niigata Prefecture. He is seen here as calming the sea by invoking the Dharma of the Lotus Sutra, "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo" which can be seen in the ocean waves. Event took place on the tenth month of 1271.
